According to Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung, synchronicity or synchrony is some kind of coincidence (or coincidences) involving two people, such as the occurrence of the same event to both, simultaneously or not, without an apparent causal relation and without the people involved being aware of it. For Jung, since they have a significant meaning for the people involved, these events would not be the product of mere chance, but the result of a connection between physically distant individuals on a hyperdeep level of psychic reality. For example, when a person, for no apparent reason, remembers someone whom they haven’t seen for a long time and, minutes later, the phone rings, and it is precisely that person on the other end. Jung called this hyperdeep level of the psyche the collective unconscious.
We could define synchronicity as a non-casual coincidence, but whose cause is unknown or cannot, under current conditions of scientific knowledge, be explained. More recent studies suggest that these coincidences can be explained by quantum physics (some physicists speak of entanglement or non-local action). There would therefore be a convergence between the Jungian theory and quantum phenomena. Some, however, prefer to assign these synchronicities to mere chance or apophenia, a tendency to recognise patterns where they do not exist. (Check the links Apophenia and Processes, methodologies and the human brain.)
The problem is that, as these coincidences, however significant they may be, rarely occur and involve only two people (in some cases only one), it is difficult to know whether it is a phenomenon governed by a hitherto unknown physical or psychic law or whether it is all just a coincidence.
Of course, as the coincidences pile up, the thesis that it’s all about fortuitous events wanes. For example, one can find a number of similarities between the biographies of Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein (beyond the simple fact that they were the two greatest geniuses of physics), or between those of Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson (the two greatest pop idols in history), Beatles and Bee Gees (the two greatest pop rock bands ever), or — the most classic and noised case — Abraham Lincoln and John Kennedy, the two most distinguished American presidents. (See in this regard The Lincoln-Kennedy coincidence and other “coincidences”.)
Note: in due course, we will demonstrate the synchronicities in the biographies of the above-mentioned people. |
Still, we are collecting facts of the trajectories of individuals or small groups of people whose similarity or not is the object of a subjective judgement, and the impossibility of predicting new occurrences would make any scientific experiment that attempted to prove the thesis unfeasible.
However, when certain coincidences are repeated over and over again, involving not just individuals or small groups of people, but entire nations, made up of millions of individuals, on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, and have been occurring for at least two thousand years, it begins to become evident that there is something going on that cannot result from purely fortuitous circumstances. In this case, we would not only have synchronicity, but “supersynchronicity.”
This portal aims to prove to you that the nations and peoples of the Western Civilisation (i.e., Latin peoples, speakers of Romance languages, and Germanic peoples, speakers of Germanic languages, both in Europe and the Americas) have between each other so many resemblances, similarities, analogies, symmetries, mirrorings (or any other name that you want to give it[1]) in their history, geography, languages, cultures and other social events, for so long and often in a way so mathematically precise that it is practically impossible for it all to be just the work of chance.
Borrowing Jung’s term — but not necessarily attributing the origin of the phenomena described here to the collective unconscious, the quantum dimension of reality or any other purely speculative explanation — I would say that, as there can be synchronicities between persons, there may also be between groups of persons, including peoples and nations. It is what I am calling “synchronicity on a global scale” or “supersynchronicity”.
But why would this be happening in Western Europe and its former colonies and not in any other region of the planet? Why would only these two ethnic-linguistic families be united (entangled, in quantum terms) and not others?
If synchronicity is something whose occurrence is an exception rather than the rule, this may explain why it has been happening for so long in Western Civilisation and not in other civilisations. If there is in fact a parallelism in the lives of Lincoln and Kennedy, why nothing similar happened between any two other American presidents? The reason may be exactly the quantum nature of the phenomenon: of all the particles that make up the Universe, only a few entangle and begin to undergo non-local phenomena (that is, whose simultaneity and similarity do not rely on a detectable physical connection). The fact is that we are all inserted in this network of symmetries. And, as I hope to prove, nothing that is casual.
The thesis I advocate is that Latin countries and peoples have, each, a Germanic correspondent which is its “mirror”. (Although the number of independent states is different in each family, if we consider autonomous regions or those which have been independent in the past, in short, ethnically distinct regions, we will find a match point to point.) The numerous facts presented here seek to show that there are strong connections between France and England, Italy and Germany, Iberian and Scandinavian countries, Romania[2] and Iceland, Brazil and the United States, Argentina and Canada…, as if each of these countries were the mirror image of its correspondent. These connections are revealed especially in events that make the history of these countries follow parallel paths, as well as in linguistic facts — phonetic, orthographic, lexical and grammatical — that make English the mirror image of French, Italian the reflection of German and so on. But also landforms — some man-made, such as cities, other prior to human existence, such as islands, mountains and peninsulas — reflect these connections, as if mirror peoples had been guided to occupy territories that already had connections with each other.
Finally, these interrelations extend to various cultural phenomena, such as artistic and intellectual movements, product brands, colours of flags, coats of arms, anthems, sports uniforms and many others I will try to expose here.
The big question is: why does this phenomenon happen? And why does it only happen in the West? Is it a law of nature or just a series of coincidences? But, if it is a law, why don’t we find it in other parts of the world? Could it be that only the Western world has the ideal conditions for its occurrence? This is not an entirely implausible hypothesis, after all the very beginning of life is an example of this: although it can, in theory, happen anywhere in the Universe, our planet is, to date, the only one we know of to harbour life, and this is precisely thanks to a rare combination of favourable circumstances.
Indeed, if we research closely, we will find synchronicities involving not only the history of contemporary nations, but also that of peoples separated by hundreds of years. Although the word synchronicity means etymologically “simultaneity”, supersynchronistic facts can be separated by decades or centuries. As I mentioned above, it is also possible to find analogies in the biography of famous personalities (and probably also ordinary people, although in this case it is much more difficult to investigate), in the trajectory of groups of people, such as institutions, organisations and companies — and countries are not but large groups of people —, in political and artistic movements, in rock bands, in the course of different historical periods and, in general, in all that relates to human existence. These analogies give rise to a series of speculations and explanations not scientifically proven, such as that spirits reincarnate or history repeats itself (Italian historian Giambattista Vico demonstrated that history repeats itself in cycles, what Eastern philosophies also claim). In fact, the hypothesis of supersynchronicity converges not only with certain postulates of quantum physics as well as Buddhism, Taoism, etc.
Anyway, supersynchronicity does not affect each and every person or human group, but only certain pairs of people or human groups that, I suppose, meet the ideal conditions for the occurrence of the phenomenon. And as I said, synchronicity is different from mere coincidence, since similar events happen randomly in the lives of all people. Even Jung’s meaningful coincidences are very rare. In contrast, supersynchronicity is a set of coincidences too big to simply be casual, especially because it is possible to recognise in it a hidden logic. A logic that, if correctly read, can make the phenomenon predictable, even though, comparing the history of people or groups allegedly synchronic, we always find more differences than similarities. Were it not so, we would have almost an identity. Were it not so, this mirror would not be “invisible”, but would have been revealed long ago. There seems to be, on the part of nature or whatever causes the phenomenon, a certain subtlety that must be understood to be unveiled. My challenge here is to convince you, the reader, that the mirror does exist and, although invisible, projects in our world images that can be seen by anyone who knows how to look.
The recognition that synchronicities occur in all areas of human existence leads to three conclusions:
a) that a supposed science of synchronicities (synchronistics or synchronology) is nothing more than research into mathematical patterns existing in nature;
b) that these patterns never repeat themselves in exactly the same way because the conditions in which they occur are never completely identical;
c) that synchronicities are rare because they need “ideal” conditions to occur.
This portal aims, finally, to show that the enormous amount of geographical, historical, linguistic, social and cultural similarities between the Romanic and Germanic peoples allows us to treat them as if they were the mirror of each other. Although a fully scientific explanation is not yet available, such coincidences are surely due to some rationally explainable factor and not the whim of supernatural forces. In fact, human beings have a strong tendency to resort to supernatural whenever they cannot rationally explain certain phenomena. However, experience shows that, over time, the rational explanation eventually emerges, and what seemed supernatural turns out to be just another law of nature. So this is not a mysticism but a science portal (or a science project). If we cannot, for now, know why this mirroring happens, it is imperative to demonstrate that it happens — and how it happens. As Isaac Newton would say about the reason for the existence of gravity: hypotheses non fingo, “I do not suggest any hypotheses”. After all, science is not only about theories but also — and mainly — about data collection, phenomenology. It is the analysis of these data what leads to the development of theories. The simple fact that there is a “mirror” reflecting historical events, geographical features, words and linguistic structures, and other human phenomena, and even more, it has remained invisible for so long, although it has always been in plain sight, justifies alone this study. As you will see, there are so many evidences that it is impossible to continue to ignore them.
However, if it seems to you that it is all just a coincidence and that supersynchronicity is a pseudoscience or mere entertainment, it’s okay: in any case, have a good time!

[1] I use in this portal the terms synchronicity, supersynchronicity, synchrony, specularity, mirroring, symmetry, analogy and parallelism as synonyms. The reason is simple: avoid boring repetition of the same terms, since the concept they represent is often mentioned in every post on the portal.
[2] Besides designating a country in Eastern Europe, the name Romania also designates another concept, namely the region of Europe where once Latin was spoken. On this portal, every time the latter concept is referred to, there will be an alert in the text itself.
