Element that joins the stem of a word to generate a derivative word. Affixes are called prefixes when they precede the stem (Lat. depingere; stem pig-), infixes when they interleave the stem (pingere), suffixes when they follow the stem (pigmentum) and interfixes when interposed between the stem and a suffix (Lat. alimentum, stem al-).
Consonant formed by a plosive sound (stop) followed by a fricative, as [pf], [ts] or [tʃ], for example.
